Jez Averty is Senior Vice President, Exploration, Norway, and the UK. Jez is a member of Statoil’s Exploration, Management Committee and the Corporate Strategy Function.
Jez over 25 years oil industry experience, primarily in exploration. He has worked North-West Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North America.
Jez began his career as a geologist with Amoco (UK) Exploration in London in 1992 after graduating from the University of London with an MSc in Petroleum Geology. Jez moved to Norway in 1997 where he held a number of exploration roles in Norway before entering the international arena in 2000.
Jez has held a number of exploration management positions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Jez moved to Luanda, Angola in 2002 — immediately after the end of the 27-year civil war –- where he spent 5 years working with Sonangol, the national oil company.
Jez moved to the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and took over as head of Exploration North America in September 2013 before returning to Norway in the summer of 2015.
An Englishman who regards Norway as his home, he is married with two young boys. You will occasionally find Jez on a bike or in front of his barbeque. He took up the piano again after a 25-year absence. His family is very pleased that he has headphones.
